This Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production was last reconstituted on 27th July 2009. The 12-member Committee has four members from the opposition and the rest from the ruling party and its coalition partners. The Committee, which comprises distinguished and experienced parliamentarians, has the responsibility of oversight of executive functions of the Defence and Defence Production. Lt. Gen. (retd) Javed Ashraf is the elected Chairman of the Committee.

Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production was formed on April 19, 2004. The Committee elected Lt. Gen (R) Javed Ashraf as its Chairman. Other members of the Committee included Senator Muhammad Akram, Senator Khalil-ur-Rehman, Senator Asif Jatoi, Senator Waqar Ahmed Khan, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Senator Mouhim Khan Baloch, Senator Naeem Hussain Chatta, Senator Farhat Ullah Babar, Senator Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Abbasi, Senator Kamran Murtaza and Senator Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi.

On 22nd December 2004, elected Senator Nisar A. Memon as its new Chairman. Other members of the Committee included Senator Khalil-ur-Rehman, Senator Muhammad Akram, Senator Asif Jatoi, Senator Waqar Ahmed Khan, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Senator Mouhim Khan Baloch, Senator Naeem Hussain Chatta, Senator Farhat ullah Babar, Senator Mehtab Ahmed Abbasi, Senator Kamram Murtaza and Senator Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi.

The present Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production was formed on April 19, 2006. The Committee elected Senetor Nisar A. Memon as its Chairman in its fist meeting held on October 19, 2006. The other eleven members of the Committee are Senator Mir Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali, Senator Kamil Ali Agha,  Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Senator Syed Dilawar Abbas, Senator Naeem Hussain Chatta, Senator Asif Jatoi, Senator Waqar Ahmed Khan, Senator Prof. Khursheed Ahmed, Senator Senator Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Abbasi, Senator Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi and Senator Kamran Murtaza.

Each Committee has the oversight function of its concerned divisions. It also handles any matter sent by the House for the Committee\\\'s deliberation as well as review of any legislation to it by the House.
It can also take cognizance of the matters of public interest in the concerned divisions and receive public interest in the concerned divisions and receive public petitions for necessary hearings.

Senator Nisar A. Memon is Chairman of the Committee. 
The Committee has eleven other members. Minister for Defence and Minister for Defence Production are Ex-Officio members of the Committee. Mr. Iftikharullah Babar is the Secretary of the Committee.
